Dairy Proposal Not Good Enough

July 21, 2011 By Ron Sylvester 1 Comment

National Farmers Union President Roger Johnson wants Congress to know that serious work on U.S. dairy policy is appreciated but it must protect small producers as well as large.

“While we are very appreciative of Ranking Member Peterson’s proposal to initiate meaningful and necessary dairy reform, our Board of Directors feels that the proposal in its current form is inadequate,” said NFU President Roger Johnson. “The current proposal would not provide a safety net for all dairy farmers, particularly family-sized operators. A fundamental problem with this proposal is that it appears that the largest farmers will reap the greatest benefits at the expense of smaller family farms.”

Johnson is speaking of U.S. Rep. Collin Peterson, D-MN, ranking member on the House Committee on Agriculture, and the effort he is leading to push dairy reform, likely before the 2012 Farm Bill. Peterson’s latest proposal draws heavily from the National Milk Producers Federation “Foundation for the Future” work.

In a recent meeting, the NFU Board of Directors passed a resolution speaking directly to Peterson’s approach on dairy reform. The NFU resolution outlines several reform oriented solutions to the ongoing crisis for dairymen, especially smaller family farmers.

Farm Bill Coverage from Marietta Times

July 19, 2011 By Ron Sylvester Leave a Comment

Ashley Rittenhouse has an interesting story today in the Marietta Times on some thoughts from opinion leaders in Ohio and Washington on the future of food and nutrition programs:

The Food, Conservation and Energy Act of 2008, otherwise known as the Farm Bill, expires in 2012 and there’s a debate over changes that could come with its renewal and portions that could be eliminated.

That includes concerns locally and in Ohio about whether funding for food and nutrition programs and farm subsidies could dry up.

The legislation drives federal spending and policies on agriculture, nutrition and conservation programs, ranging from crop insurance to food stamps.

The 2008 Farm Bill contained 15 titles covering support for, among other things, commodity crops, horticulture and livestock, conservation, nutrition, trade and food aid, agricultural research, farm credit, rural development and energy and forestry, according to the Congressional Research Service.

The administration and other deficit reduction task forces have submitted budget proposals to reduce farm supports, while many farm sector advocates support the status quo.

Beginning Farmers in New Knoxville Helping to Build Healthy, Sustainable Food System in Ohio

July 8, 2011 By Ron Sylvester 1 Comment

Deb Eschmeyer at the Bexley Farmers Market in late June

Jeff & Deb Eschmeyer come from a conventional agriculture background in a part of Ohio known for its expansive farms on good flat ground worked by generations of families of German descent.

Both Jeff and Deb grew up in farm families and for a time these high school sweethearts who now operate their own small farm acted on another convention of rural life – they left the farms and their small town of New Knoxville and sought their fortunes in various places — Chicago and Washington, D.C. among others. They pursued careers that intersected with agriculture, but “the farm” was far away as they held jobs like Legislative aide to former U.S. Sen. Mark Dayton (Jeff) and program director for the D.C.-based non-profit the National Family Farm Coaliiton (Deb).

Today however, the Eschmeyers have come full-circle in a sense and their place in the world and Ohio’s economy is anything but conventional.
