NFU working on preserving effective Country of Origin Labeling in wake of WTO Ruling

December 5, 2012 By Ron Sylvester Leave a Comment

from The National Farmers Union

WASHINGTON – The World Trade Organization has given the United States until May 23, 2013, to bring its Country-of-Origin Labeling (COOL) rules into compliance with a WTO ruling.

“NFU will continue to work with United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Office of the United States Trade Representative to ensure that new rules for COOL fit with the WTO’s ruling and with consumer demand for more information about the origins of their food,” said National Farmers Union (NFU) President Roger Johnson.

The labeling law was passed as a part of the Farm Security and Rural Investment Act of 2002 and amended in 2008, requiring retailers to notify their customers of the source of certain foods. After COOL was implemented, Canada and Mexico filed a complaint against the United States’ law. A WTO ruling in June agreed in part with the complaint, stating that the way by which the law was implemented discriminated against imported meat products, but did not find fault with the law itself.

“NFU has a proud record of supporting COOL. We were instrumental in getting the COOL laws passed in 2002 and again in 2008 and will continue to support its implementation in a way that meets the requirements of the WTO.”

According to the USDA Economic Research Service, food imports have consistently increased since 1990.

“Consumers want and have the right to know from where their meat comes from. We will continue to vigorously defend the COOL law, which was upheld in June. Only the rules that were issued to implement COOL law are in question and can be adjusted.”

Advanced biofuels commercialization continues

National Farmers Union press release:

WASHINGTON (Nov. 28, 2012) – National Farmers Union (NFU) President Roger Johnson hailed the passage of an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act of 2013 that will enable the Department of Defense (DOD) to move away from foreign oil reliance and towards commercialization of advanced biofuels produced in the United States. Previous language in the bill blocked DOD’s effort to become more energy independent. The amendment was led by Sen. Mark Udall, D-Colo.

Sen. George McGovern had roots in farming and served family farmers

October 22, 2012 By Ron Sylvester Leave a Comment

The National Farmers Union reflected today on the illustrious career of former Senator George McGovern of South Dakota, who died Oct. 21, 2012.

“From his South Dakota farm roots, to the U.S. Senate, and later as ambassador of the United Nation’s Agencies on Food and Agriculture, Senator McGovern spent his life as a tireless champion of agriculture, nutrition and rural America,” said NFU President Roger Johnson.

McGovern served as the honorary co-chair of the NFU Foundation and was recognized with NFU’s Meritorious Service Award for his humanitarian efforts in 2003.

Help Combat Hunger with NFU & Feeding America

September 25, 2012 By Ron Sylvester Leave a Comment

Once again the National Farmers Union is teaming up with Feeding America and the Howard G. Buffett Foundation to help fight hunger in America.

The Howard G. Buffett Foundation has pledged a $50,000 challenge grant to Farmers Union members across the U.S. This means that every dollar we raise, up to $50,000, will be matched by the foundation.

“I am asking all Ohio Farmers Union members to do their part in helping NFU raise these needed funds to help the needy,” said Roger Wise, OFU president.

Just follow the link at the end of this story to donate. Your online donation will be tracked by Feeding America as a Farmers Union contribution and matched by the Buffett Foundation.

All member-driven donations go to food banks that serve hungry people in their communities. Feeding America’s more than 200 member food banks serve 61,000 agencies across the United States that addresses hunger through emergency food assistance and programs.

Through Buffet’s challenge, every dollar donated helps provide $17 worth of food and groceries to Americans in need. With the Buffett Foundation’s matching grant, NFU members will see that number double to $34. If Farmers Union members can reach the goal set of $50,000, it will provide $1.7 million worth of food.

“Ensuring all Americans have a safe, reliable, affordable food supply is something that those of us in agriculture are very concerned about,” said Johnson. “Currently, 37 million Americans are facing hunger, including 14 million children and 3 million seniors. Partnering up with Feeding America gives us an opportunity to lend our part in providing fresh food for families who need it most.”

NFU’s Johnson blasts Congress on idea to extend 2008 Farm Bill

July 30, 2012 By Ron Sylvester Leave a Comment

Wasn’t there a time in America when the good people who represent us in Congress could lay aside political differences and do serious public policy when the nation faced emergency? Wouldn’t you say that the worst U.S. drought since the 1950s might be just such an emergency?

Leaders in the U.S. House of Representatives think differently. The latest proposal is to lay aside the Senate Farm Bill (passed) and the House Farm Bill (through committee) and just extend the current law. Here’s what National Farmers Union President Roger Johnson said today on the subject:

As House takes up Farm Bill, Midwest farmers say conservation is key

July 5, 2012 By Ron Sylvester Leave a Comment

Farmers in the U.S. ‘heartland’ value the conservation programs funded under the current Farm Bill and do not want to see cuts in conservation as Congress debates changes to this cornerstone agricultural legislation, says a poll done on behalf of the National Farmers Union and Cultivate Impact.

NFU praises biofuels investment for U.S. military

July 5, 2012 By Ron Sylvester Leave a Comment

WASHINGTON  – National Farmers Union President Roger Johnson issued the following statement after U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack, joined by Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus and Deputy Assistant to the President for Energy and Climate Change Heather Zichal, announced the availability of up to $30 million in funding for commercial scale advanced drop-in biofuels both through the Defense Production Act and the Department of Energy.

“Today’s announcement is a very positive step as the U.S. military continues to increase its use of biofuels, decreasing its reliance on foreign oil. As a matter of national security, it simply makes sense to utilize home-grown fuel rather than relying on foreign oil. Increasing the use of biofuels also helps to moderate fuel costs. A small increase in the price of crude oil means a big jump in fuel costs for our armed forces.

“This initiative is also great for rural America, because it helps to create more jobs and keeps more money here in the United States rather than sending it overseas. These jobs help ensure a thriving rural America, which is good for everyone.”

House Ag appropriations misses mark: NFU

June 7, 2012 By Ron Sylvester Leave a Comment

WASHINGTON – National Farmers Union expressed disappointment today at the mark up of the U.S. House of Representatives Appropriations Subcommittee on Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies Fiscal Year 2013 agriculture appropriations bill today. The bill was approved by voice vote and will move on to the House Appropriations Committee.

The bill includes $19.4 billion in discretionary funding, which represents a cut of $365 million from last year’s level, and falls $1.7 billion short of President Obama’s request.

NFU leads coalition urging Senate passage of 2012 Farm Bill

May 8, 2012 By Ron Sylvester Leave a Comment

WASHINGTON  – National Farmers Union and a coalition of agricultural, conservation, environmental, energy, forestry, hunger, and rural stakeholders sent a letter to Senate leadership today urging them to bring the Agriculture Reform, Food and Jobs Act of 2012 to the Senate floor as soon as possible. NFU led the effort, which was supported by more than 125 organizations.

“This is one piece of legislation upon which all Americans depend, urban as well as rural,” stated the letter. “With limited time remaining before the expiration of current program authorities, time is of the essence.”

The Agriculture Reform, Food and Jobs Act of 2012 passed the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry on April 26 by a 16-5 vote. The broad range of the 125 cosigners emphasizes the expansive reach and impact of the farm bill.

“This strongly bipartisan bill ensures that agriculture does its part to reduce the deficit, cutting spending by $23 billion, while still maintaining a safety net that family farmers and ranchers need,” said NFU President Roger Johnson. “Some farm bill programs have already expired, and the rest expire on Sept. 30. It is critical to pass a farm bill as soon as possible so that Americans have the agriculture, conservation, environmental, forestry, hunger, and rural development programs that they need. While many of us will continue to work for improvements in the bill, we all agree that we need a farm bill this year.”

Contact your federal legislators about a Market Driven Inventory System for the Farm Bill

April 12, 2012 By Ron Sylvester Leave a Comment

If you’re not up to speed on MDIS – the Market Driven Inventory System being advocated for the next Farm Bill by the National Farmers Union, you should be – and so should your representatives in Congress.

MDIS is a farm program framework that smooths out market volatility and allows farmers to make their living on what they produce and not through government payments. NFU and the creators of MDIS, the University of Tennessee’s Agricultural Policy Analysis Center, have been working on research to show that MDIS would save taxpayers money by cutting direct government payments to farmers while continuing to provide a market stability-based security net.

“(MDIS) is an agricultural commodity program that mitigates price volatility, providing advantages to livestock producers, the biofuels industry, and to hungry people in this country and around the world. In addition, it would reduce government expenses, increase the value of crop exports, and maintain net farm income over time,” NFU President Roger Johnson recently told a Congressional committee.

Johnson and others have been educating Congress on MDIS, it’s time you learned more and joined the effort.

First:

Go to the MDIS page at the NFU website. Familiarize yourself with some of the basics and ask yourself, “What would this policy mean for my farm and my business?”

Then:

Contact your legislator and let them know in your own words why you support MDIS in the Farm Bill. In Ohio our U.S. Senators are Sherrod Brown and Rob Portman – they need to hear from you and know this is a serious, win-win policy proposal for farmers and taxpayers. Follwing this link will take you to a tool where you can determine who your member of Congress is and contact them as well. Use the zip code lookup.
